Lithuania

Lithuania is a Northeastern European country, the largest of the three Baltic States. It borders the Baltic Sea to the West, Latvia to the North, Belarus to the South and East, Poland to the South and Russian exclave Kaliningrad Oblast to the Southwest.

Independent between the two World Wars, Lithuania was annexed by the USSR in 1940. In 1990, Lithuania was the first of the Soviet republics to declare its independence, which was generally recognized in 1991. The last Russian troops withdrew in 1993. Today, Lithuania is an independent democratic republic with a multi-party parliament.

Lithuania subsequently has restructured its economy for eventual integration into Western European institutions. It enjoyed a considerable economic growth after entering the European Union in 2004 along with other Baltic states, leading to the notion of a Baltic Tiger. The country is a prime transport centre in the region, since it lies in the juncture between the EU and the East.

WECF works closely with the partners from Lithuania in the fields of environmental sustainability, Chemicals and Health as well as Gender and Rights.
