Moldova

Moldova is Europe’s poorest country with some economic progress being made the last few years. Situated between Romania and Ukraine in South Eastern Europe, the largely agricultural country faces many difficulties. At the same time it has the most independent press of all CIS countries.

The conflict with the breakaway republic in Transnistria remains unresolved. The country is highly dependent on trade with Russia. Here the banning of Moldovan wine and the raising of gas prices hurt the economy badly in 2006.

More than 60% of the population lives below the national poverty line, with approximately 1/3 surviving on less than a dollar a day.  In 2006, about one third of Moldova’s population of working age worked abroad, the money they sent home accounting for about 30% of GDP.

Agricultural pesticides – quite often banned chemicals such as DDT – are in heavy use and lead to soil and water contamination. Over 90% of the rural population use traditional pit latrines

Dug wells are used by more than 80% of the rural population as the source of their drinking water,  which is more often unsafe than safe.

WECF projects are aimed at improving this situation by spreading the use of river basin management, ecological sanitation, solid waste management and organic farming.
