Romania

Romania with a population of rougly 22 million is bordered by the Black Sea, Bulgaria, Hungary, Moldova, Serbia and the Ukraine. The Romanian language is a Romance language based upon Dacian and Latin, the language of its early Roman conquerors. Romania's landscape consists of hills, mountains and plains. The Danube is the longest and most important river flowing through Romania. The country joined the EU in 2007.

Almost 140 million people, 16 per cent of the European population, still do not have household water connections. Some 13,500 children under 14 years of age die every year from diarrhoea related to dirty water and poor sanitation and hygiene. The majority of these deaths (11,000) occur in countries in Central and Eastern Europe and the Central Asian Republic. (WHO Report)

Romania is just one of the European countries with an inadequate wastewater management system and inadequate means for protecting the groundwater. In Romania more than 10 million people lack adequate sanitation. (Water Aid Report).
