A call for help from the Kayenje School

Building ecosan toilets at Kayenje Primary School in Uganda

16.12.2014 | WICF Project

Countries: Uganda
Donors: Private donors
Partners: Kayenje Primary School Uganda
Issues: Sanitation
Duration: 07/2014 - 07/2015

In May 2013 Wilson Wabalanda, Headteacher of the Kayenje Primary school in the Barumbala district, central Uganda, contacted WECF with a request for help. Wilson is very worried about the sanitary condition of the “school toilets” and in particular for the safety and dignity of the girls.

The school was founded in 1903 and we can say the present used toilets do not deserve the name of “toilet”. Since 1903 little was done to upgrade the toilets and to guarantee some basic privacy or comfort for the users. During  class time 760 children, aged 6-14 years, and their 16 teachers have no alternatives for the 3 pit latrines that are currently used and which cannot be locked and are in a real bad state.

By introducing the Ecosan toilets at the Kayenje school we are not only able to create a safe, sanitary, and sustainable environment in the school itself, but it will also mean that the waste materials can be used in the gardens as fertilizer and that the urine can be used as pest control. These small changes will be able to greatly improve the current situation in Kayenje and are therefore of great importance.

The progress of the project can be followed on Pifworld.
