With simple methods and means, agricultural cultivation methods and local livestock farming are improved and made more profitable. This project is co-financed with an existing project in Uganda: 'Better living conditions, less rural migration', financed by the Bavarian State Chancellery.
The aim of this project is to improve the living conditions of the rural population through a more productive and sustainable agricultural strategy, based on methods of Organic Agriculture and Conservation Agriculture (CA), with the following principles:
- Conservation tillage
- Crop rotation
- No synthetic pesticides
Another overarching objective is to empower young people, women and men in the Masindi region, so that they can successfully thrive on their work in agriculture, and can also afford their children's school fees. In addition, agricultural products are better marketed through education for economic efficiency and access to local credit.
In the subproject, livestock farming, especially pigs and chickens, should be improved and made more productive. 20 participating communities and the local St. Joseph's Farm of Missionaries, used as a demonstration farm will jointly, sustainably and efficiently organise livestock farming and commercialization.
This is achieved by:
- Improved stables and healthy animal husbandry
- Improved and adapted breeds
- Local cultivation of nutritious food, e.g. sorghum
- Education on pig farming according to bio standard
- Organic chicken keeping education
In order for the project to be sustainable, farmers are offered a wide range of educational measures, demonstrations of sustainable agriculture and animal husbandry, as well as intensive support during the implementation of what has been learned.
