Asbestos and asbestos waste are hazardous to human health and the environment. Kyrgyzstan is one of world's biggest consumers of asbestos. Currently asbestos containing materials are used without restriction in public buildings like hospitals, schools and kindergartens, and in many other consumer products such as brakes and building materials.
The people of Kyrgyzstan are exposed to asbestos in their homes and livelihoods, and while in contact with asbestos waste. There is no evaluation of diseases caused by asbestos, the Public and even many non-governmental organisations are not aware of hazardous health effects of asbestos.
The topic is relevant to the public; especially for vulnerable groups like the poor and children, highly exposed groups like workers and inhabitants of waste areas because they suffer from exposure and do not even know that the surroundings they live might be highly dangerous.
To raise awareness, provide information, build networks, strengthen citizen's capacities and develop solution strategies to present to state authorities, this project will help to reduce the use of asbestos and clean up contaminated waste sites. People now and future generations will highly benefit from these activities.
WECF in cooperation with BIOM, Kyrgyzstan, will convene a High-Level Conference on Asbestos in Bishkek and conduct trainings in several cities of Kyrgyzstan with different multpliers, including NGOs.

Asbest – wachsendes Bewusstsein in Kirgistan zur Stärkung der Zivilgesellschaft

Kirgistan ist wie Kasachstan einer der größten Konsumenten von Asbest. Hauptsächlich werden asbesthaltigen Baumaterialien wie Zement hergestellt, und Produkte wie Bremsbeläge oder Isolationsmaterialien benutzt. Die Bevölkerung ist in ihren Häusern, in öffentlichen Gebäuden wie Schulen und Kindergärten und im Alltag Asbest und seinen Altlasten ausgesetzt. Es ist bisher keine ausreichende Information über die Gefahren von Asbest erhältlich und es gibt auch keine Untersuchung von asbestbedingten Krankheiten in Kirgistan.
Nahezu jede Kirgisin und jeder Kirgise sind Asbest ausgesetzt. In die meisten Häsuer wurden mit asbesthaltigen Materialien gebaut, ebenso viele öffentliche Gebäude wie Schulen, Kindergärten, Krankenhäuser etc. Die Gefahren die von Asbest ausgehen, sind der Bevölkerung, aber auch politischen Entscheidungsträgern sowie Organisationen der Zivilgesellschaft nicht bekannt und nicht bewusst.
Diese Situation soll durch die Bereitstellung von Information, die Ausbildung von Trainern, das Aufbauen von Netzwerken, die Stärkung von Bürgerrechten und das Entwickeln von Lösungsstrategien für staatliche Stellen verbessert werden.
Am Anfang des Projektes steht eine Bestandsaufnahme, um die spezifischen Bedingungen in Kirgistan zum ersten Mal möglichst detailliert zu erfassen und daraufhin spezifisches Informationsmaterial zu erstellen. Sieben Trainings, die sich insbesondere an Multiplikatoren richten, werden in sieben verschiedenen kirgisischen Städten durchgeführt.
Im Mai 2011 wird eine High-level Konferenz in Bishkek, Kirgistan durchgeführt, unter Beteiligung von staatlichen Entscheidungsträgern, Wirtschaft, Zivilgesellschaft, internationalen Organisationen wie der Rotterdam Konvention, WHO, ILO und des deutschen Umweltministeriums. Eine Teilnahme der kirgisischen Partner an der internationalen Conference of the Parties (COP5) der Rotterdam Konvention, wo die Aufnahme von Chrysotil Asbest ein Programmpunkt sein wird, unterstützt die internationale Vernetzung der Zivilgesellschaft und ihre Beteiligung an internationalen Prozessen.
