The project
The aim of the project was to build capacity of 18 women- and environmental NGOs in 7 countries of Caucasus and Central Asia in the area of sustainable energy and climate protection. Main issues were promotion of climate protection in rural areas of the above countries by implementing energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies, as well as poverty reduction and sustainable development.
The partner NGOs should receive the knowledge needed for working on a local and regional transformation of the energy sector, promoting energy saving, energy efficiency and renewable energy.
WECF has been working together with 18 NGO partners from the above countries on a joint solution of the energy problem in the region, addressing at the same time the connected problems of poverty and climate change. The project has been realized in cooperation with communal and regional authorities in the project countries; SPARE (Norway); University of Wageningen (Netherlands); TU Hamburg-Harburg; Solar Partner Sued; Atmosfair (Germany).

Capacity building
WECF organized several trainings for the partner NGOs and other related stakeholders (local and national authorities, politicians, representatives of local business and universities) focused on the following 3 topics:
practical implementation of concrete projects, innovative direct contribution to climate change and poverty reduction, taking into account the social roles of men and women and the active involvement and empowerment of women
knowledge transfer of the training participants as multiplicators and trainers
introduction to the possibilities of national and international legislation and processes (UNFCCC)

Project achievements
The project activities contributed to build the capacity of the project partners and other related stakeholders (local and national authorities, politicians, representatives of local business and universities) to find joint solutions to energy poverty, poverty reduction and climate protection. Demonstration objects have been built to demonstrate sustainable energy solutions in the target countries. Policy recommendations have been developed and presented to local governments and to the UNFCCC.
The project initiated an important first step for awareness raising among multiplicators and population. A remarkable number of trainings and informational events in the project regions, which took place following our trainings, show the further distribution of the knowledge that has been built among our partners through the training. Since 2008, many partner organisations started working on sustainable energy projects, partly independently and partly together with WECF. In its future projects, WECF will further stimulate exchange and technology transfer.
