EWATajikistan: the constant empowerment of women is important

"Empower Women - Benefit (for) All (EWA)"

01.04.2014 | WICF Project

Countries: Tajikistan
Donors: Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands
Duration: 01/2012 - 12/2015

The overall goal of the WECF Empower Women – Benefit for All (EWA) programme is to contribute to economic and political empowerment of women from low-income rural and peri-urban regions in Central Asia, the Caucasus, Uganda and Southern Africa.

The main issues of gender and environment within EWA are how women can access different resources in order to create their own livelihood. This is especially important in Central Asia and Tajikistan. As more and more men leave the rural areas in order to work abroad, women have to be supported and provided with capacities and opportunities to generate income for the survival of their families. Urgently needed resources include, inter alia, access to land (land titles), access to loans, seeds, markets and know-how.

Although it is difficult to tackle these issues, WECF tries to give critical input to press ahead with amending the legislation regarding agricultural and land reform in Tajikistan. A recent research from the local partner YEC on “women and farming” is available and used for advocacy work. In addition, the constant empowerment of women, on the level of local communities, as well as on district and national levels, using leadership trainings, trainings on business development and other capacity building, is important as a corner-stone to establish a long-term and sustainable change towards gender equality.
