International Chemical Management - The Position of German and International NGOs towards SAICM Post-2020 and Sustainable Chemistry

The mandate of the Strategic Approach on International Chemicals Management (SAICM) ends in 2020. Now, the challenge consists in creating a SAICM Post-2020 process for the International Chemicals Management. This leads to the question if and how the concept of Sustanaible Chemistry can be integrated.
ACTIVITIES AND OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT
The objective of this project is to formulate a common position of national and international NGOs towards the issues SAICM Post-2020 and Sustainable Chemistry. For this purpose WECF initiated an on-going exchange of information with relevant NGOs. WECF informs the group of NGOs, develops and discusses different positions and unites them in a position paper which will be brought into relevant international and national discussions. Thereby, the project makes a crucial contribution to the international chemikals management of the future.
Activities within this project:
- WECF informs national and international NGOS which are dealing with the issue of chemical safety about the current SAICM process and discusses how a continuation beyond 2020 could be created
- WECF informs about the issue Sustainable Chemistry and discusses if and how the topic could be integrated into the SAICM post-2020 process
- WECF develops a fact sheet and position paper on this topic
- WECF participates in relevant conferences and presents the NGO position
The background of the project:
The Strategic Approach on International Chemicals Management (SAICM) is an international initiative to achieve chemical safety. In the course of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) the first International Conference on Chemicals Management (ICCM) passed in 2006 in Dubai the SAICM.
SAICM incorporates different actors and sectors and works on voluntary basis. SAICM bundels in a overarching framework different activities to achieve chemical safety on global level. The objective of SAICM is to mitigate negative impacts of chemicals for human health and environment by the year 2020. The SAICM 2002-goal bases on an agreement at the world summit in Johannesburg in 2002.
Basis elements of SAICM are the Overarching Policy Strategies (OPS) and the Global Plan of Action (GPA) in which the objectives and implementation measures are formulated.
The mandate of SAICM ends in 2020. WECF engages since the beginning in the SAICM process and advocates for a continuation of an international multi-stakeholder forum after 2020 to achieve chemical safety in order to protect human health and the environment. If and how this Post-2020 process will be implemented must be discussed until ICCM5. To integrate the perspective of NGOs in these discussions is a major task of this project.
