WECF present at European Parliamentarians' brainstorm on water scarcity

The European Parliament is drafting its response to the European Commission’s Communication on water scarcity and drought. To secure input into that report, European Parliament rapporteur Richard Seeber in cooperation with the European Water Partnership (EWP) organized an initial brainstorm with stakeholders, including national governments, regions, NGOs and business on February the 13th in Brussels.
Claudia Wendland represented WECF on the 13th of February at a discussion in Brussels organized by MEP Richard Seeber and the European Water Partnership (EWP) on the European Parliament’s response to the European Commission’s Communication on Water Scarcity and Drought
Water scarcity, accelerated by climate change, is a global issue to which Europe is not immune, Seeber argued in opening remarks. Up to 11 percent of Europe’s population and 17 percent of its territory is likely to be affected by water scarcity. This poses a threat to the continent’s economic growth and sustainable development. European losses due to water scarcity in the past 15 years exceed 100 billion euros; the drought in 2003 alone produced losses of 8.7 billion euros.
