Sustainable energy and climate change policies: a zero carbon scenario in the EU

December 6th, 2008 Women in Europe for a Common Future together with Inforse
organized a Side Event about sustainable energy and climate change at the
UNFCCC in Poznan.
INFORSE & WECF: Successes to reduce poverty, new manuals for development solutions with less GHG in South Asia, sustainable energy visions/ scenarios for North. Exchange of views among NGOs, EECCA governments & UN on capacity building, role of women, tech. transfer, UNFCCC mechanisms, human rights. Read the invitation to the side event.
The event about poverty reduction in Asia and the EECCA region and zero carbon scenarios in the EU, was chaired by Roque Pedace from Inforse and WECF energy coordinator Sabine Bock. Several issues were discussed like capacity building, gender, technology transfer, climate mechanisms and human rights.
The event was divided into two parts. The first part was about poverty reduction via sustainable energy. Different examples were given by speakers from India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka that were invited by Inforse. After these Asian examples Mrs. Faida Hussain showed a video from All India Women’s Conference. The event continued with presentations from various speakers that were invited by WECF. Their presentations showed implementations of renewable energy projects in Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Georgia.
During the second part of the event Gunnar Boye Olesen (Inforse) presented possible scenarios for the needed transition to sustainable energy in 25-50 years. He also showed that this transition will benefit for employment in Europe. After that, Paul Allen (CAT) explained his study for a carbon free future to be accomplished by 2030. The session was concluded by Ruth Bond (WI) and Irene Dankelman (WECF) who both stressed the importance of mobilizing women as changemakers. Some examples were given of women in the UK and all over Europe who are working on gender equity and climate change.
Approximately
50 NGOs and delegates participated in
the event and the chairs both concluded that the cooperation between Inforse
and WECF was successful and will be continued.
