Coalition for Climate Justice enter into second phase for funding from Netherlands Ministry of Development Cooperation

Coalition lead by WECF has passed first selection round

The Coalition for Climate Justice has passed the first hurdle in obtaining 5-year support from the Netherlands Ministry of Development Cooperation for its programme sustainable development through equitable climate programmes and policies. The coalition, which consist of the lead applicant WECF, Friends of the Earth International (FoEI), Global Forest Coalition (GFC), and Interface for Cycling Expertise (I-CE), have entered into the 2nd phase of the funding application for the MFS-programme. The Dutch development cooperation ministry, - faced with significant reductions of its budget – has requested NGOs to present coalition programmes, where cooperation on development aid programmes bring synergies and cost benefits.

The coalition lead by WECF presents a proposal for an integrated programme for climate justice at local and global level, with 2 sub-programmes, a country programme and a global programme.

The country programme will be implemented in 9 countries amongst which fragile states such as Afghanistan, and Colombia and developing countries such Uganda, Georgia, India, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, South Africa and Brazil. It will focus on strengthening civil society, monitoring effects of climate policies on poor and vulnerable populations, demonstrating best practices, transferring best practices to upscalers and promoting equitable, empowering and effective local and national policies and legislation.

The global programme will focus on making global development and climate policies more equitable and effective; developing strategic coalitions with other sectors; and outreach to policy makers and the public (voters, consumers) in developing countries and industrialized countries. The programme promotes the participation of civil society and vulnerable groups from the South in global climate and development policies.

Climate change is the biggest environmental issue of our time. In the coming decades, it will pose a serious and global threat to sustainable development, poverty elimination, peace and human rights. The world’s poor, especially those in the most geographically vulnerable regions, are bearing the brunt of climate change, especially women and children, rural people, inhabitants of growing urban (super)slums and indigenous peoples.

The Coalition for Climate Justice will address sustainable development and climate protection through its 5-year capacity building programme. The programme will build capacity of vulnerable groups to safeguard their rights and improve their livelihoods in an equitable and climate-friendly manner.
