Furthermore, the organisers prepared a competition for children and pupils about the Dniester and its environmental and social impacts. Prices in many categories were awarded to the winners. The conference ended with a resolution.
WECF participated by providing two papers for the conference publication. Anna Samwel (project officer) as well as Anke Stock (project co-ordinator) took part in the conference and presented the results of the three years Matra project “Democratisation of Dniester River Basin Governance”. Local partners as well as sub-partners from Ukraine (Black See Women’s Club), from Moldova (Eco-Tiras) and from Tiraspol (Ecospectrum) were also present. Furthermore, Anke Stock presented her paper on the right to water and sanitation and public participation. The conference was honoured with the representative of the Dutch Embassy in Kiev.
The day before the conference, the project team met and visited the demonstration projects in Transniestria – in Dnetrovsk the local stakeholders decided to concentrate on solid waste, in Pervomaisk drinking water wells were renovated, and in Nezavertajlovka water towers were set up. The main results from the demonstration projects were that state and none state stakeholders are now cooperating on environmental matters, and that the local organisations succeeded in finding follow up funding to continue and upscale the process.
