WECF attended the 13th Working Group Meeting of the Parties to the Aarhus Convention. This meeting was crucial for the preparation of the upcoming 4th Meeting of the Parties to be held in Chisinau, Moldova, on 29 June to 1 July 2011.

The major outcomes and decisions can be found here

Inter alia, the Task Force on Public Participation in International Forums will come to an end within this inter-sessional period. WECF has been intensively involved in the work of this Task Force and recognises the outcomes of the last 6 years of important work. However, WECF fears that this valuable work will not be continued with the same intensity and quality when under the auspices of the Working Group. Strong contacts between state parties and continuous review of the progress of the implementation of the Almaty Guidelines at national and international level will be required in order to face still existing challenges. Civil society will have to cooperate here with state parties and will have to push for progress by initiating projects and seminars on the issues as well as by monitoring closely how states pursue to implement their Almaty commitments.

Furthermore, a draft declaration for the MOP4 was presented by the Bureau of the Aarhus Convention. WECF will take part in the drafting group of the European Ecoforum to present ideas and concerns of civil society for the “Chisinau Declaration”.
