The project 'Building local capacity for development of thermal solar and insulation technologies' was launched on February 16-19 during a start up meeting in Telavi, Georgia, followed by workshops on community mobilisation and energy organised jointly by project partners Greens Movement of Georgia/FoE and WECF. The start-up conference (15th february) took place in Tbilisi, organized by the project partners.

Start-up meeting

All project partners spent two days in the Eastern Georgian town of Telavi at the foot of the Caucasian mountains to get a common understanding of the project, create a working plan for the first year and work on some of the challenging aspects of the project. Each partner was made aware of  its tasks and the activities were clarified. In each country, besides the community mobilisation work in the villages, three central trainings/workshops will take place for key stakeholders and partners in the first year: Baseline study and participatory monitoring, Insulation adaptation workshop and construction of solar collectors. The practical trainings will be organzed by different partners and take place in target villages.

From each of the three Ukrainian and four Georgian partners, two representatives were present. Further participated the two main international partners: GERES - the partner that will work on technical aspects of insulation and the Center for Sustainable Development (CDE) - the partner that works on community mobilisation. From WECF four members of the energy project team participated.

Conference

The very first activity of the project was the start up international conference “Thermal solar and insulation technologies and policies in Georgia”, organized by Greens Movement of Georgia and WECF on 15th February in the capital of Georgia, Tbilisi. Representatives from the ministries, embassies, donors and NGO's went in discussion about the future of renewable energy in general, and thermal solar energy and insulation in Georgia.

Learning for Sustainability - community mobilisation

The start up meeting was followed by a 2 day workshop by the Center for Sustainable Development (CDE) on baseline studies and a participatory methodology for community mobilisation – 'Learning for Sustainability'. After a theoretical introduction the participants conducted several energy transect walks in one of the target villages. The information was analysed together with community members on the last day of the workshop. This workshop will be followed up to adapt the methodology to Ukrainian and Georgian circumstances in May.

Follow up

The WECF project team stayed a few days after the start up meeting in Georgia to visit demonstration energy projects. A lot of experience on Solar collectors has been gathered during the last year, however especially the hot water tank needs to be improved. Partners and WECF are working intensively on that problem. The resource centers of RCDA and Greens Movement were visited. Those centers can be a dissemination point of the promoted technologies in this project. The project was presented to local representatives in different project areas (Sagarejo and Khobi).

During the stay in Tbilisi, individual activity plans and budgets for the Georgian partners were discussed and contracts were signed. In each country, besides community mobilisation work in the villages, three central trainings/workshops will take place for key stakeholders and partners in the first year:

  • baseline study and participatory monitoring
  • technology adaptation workshop for insulation
  • construction of solar collectors

The practical trainings will be organized by different partners and take place in target villages.

The project is financed by EU (Directorate–General (DG) EuropeAid Development and Cooperation of the European Commission)
