Children of the St. Panteleimon Home, Vidrare

On a sunny day, in the presence of both the mayor of Pravetz, Nikola Nitov, and the mayor of Vidrare, Bozhidar Marinov, and accompanied by the children and juveniles of St Panteleimon Home, the official inauguration of the first constructed wetland took place.

A number of guests from ministries, regional administration and experts from Gemany were present and took the opportunity to inform themselves about this sustainable wastewater technology. The mayor of Pravetz thanked Bistra Mihaylova, EcoWorld2007 for her enormous engagement: “without her continuous efforts, this plant would never have been realized.”, as well as WECF for initiating the project and DBU for funding it.

So far, constructed wetlands have not been known as a sustainable wastewater treatment technology for small communities in Bulgaria. Compared to conventional technical systems, constructed wetlands offer a number of advantages: they maintain a high performance, use less energy, sequester carbon and require less operation and maintenance.

Technology for small villages

“This is a very suitable technology interesting for small villages in Bulgaria which are in need to install an adequate wastewater treatment system”, said Nikolay Sidjimov, executive director of the Association of the ecologists of municipalities.
The inaugurated constructed wetland was designed by the German engineer Andrea Albold, it comprises a settling tank of 18 m3, two pumps, a sand filter with a surface area of 266 m2 and an inspection shaft for sampling the treated effluent. The design criteria was calculated to 76 population equivalents organic load and 95 population equivalents hydraulic load. Ms Albold explained the different devices on site and explained the operation of the plant to all interested participants.
It was agreed with the regional administration of Sofia oblast will participate in  monitoring of the results of the constructed wetland so that the performance will be documented and this innovative plant will serve as model demonstration for further constructed wetlands of this type.

This project “Constructed Wetland in Bulgaria” was funded by DBU, WECF and Pravetz municipality,
