1-2 September: UNEP consultations
The United Nations Environment Programme is taking place on the 1-2 of September 2011 at the German Ministry of Environment in Bonn. WECF has been contracted by UNEP HQ to help organise the meeting. Currently, the WECF director co-chairs the UNEP major group facilitating committee.
1 September: Global Rio+20 Consultation:
On 1st of Sept, UNEP is bringing together key representatives of different civil society organisations to prepare policy recommendations for next years Rio+20 UN Conference on Sustainable Development. A key issue to be addressed is the strengthening of the United Nations Environment Programme, as part of a reform of global governance of sustainable development. Another focus area is policy ‘road maps’ for greening the economy of countries, in particular by reducing subsidies to environmental damaging economic sectors, and using market and legal instruments to strengthen ‘green’ economic sectors. In the case of energy, this means addressing the 700-800 billion dollars in subsidies which are spend annually on fossil fuel based energy generation, not even to mention the subsidies going to nuclear industry. For WECF it is important that green economy roadmaps include mechanisms for corporate liability and redress, assuring rights of vulnerable groups.
2 September: Regional Consultation
On 2nd of September UNEP is organising a regional consultation for key stakeholders from the UNEP European region, to prepare their input for the UNEP governing council / environmental ministers forum taking place in February 2012.
3 September: WECF international advisory board meeting
On September 3rd, the international advisory board of WECF, which is the elected representation of WECF member organisation, will meet in Bonn for their annual meeting in which they set priorities for WECF network campaigns for the upcoming annual workplan.
4 September: UN DPI NGO conference
WECF is co-organising a workshop on Sunday 4th of September during the UN DPI NGO conference, on gender and green economic development, with a focus on consumption and production patterns. The main organisers are Voices of African Mothers, who is co-chairing the women’s major group. Other WECF members are taking part in the DPI conference including as speakers.

5th September: Consultation of the Women Rio+20 Steering Committee
A consultation of the representatives of the Women Rio+20 Steering Committee will take place on the 5th of September in Bonn, organised by WECF as part of their Rio+20 project funded by the German ministry of environment. The consultation will focus on developing policy recommendations by the women’s major group on the Rio+20 agenda point of governance of sustainable development. The meeting will also allow to plan for the upcoming regional Rio+20 consultations taking place in Santiago de Chile, Seoul, Addis Ababa and Cairo in the coming 8 weeks.
Finally, WECF members and staff are contributing to the UNEP TUNZA youth meeting which is taking place in Bonn on the 6th and 7th of September, and which will primarily focus on the preparations for Rio+20.
