The two days in Stockholm were hosted by SEI where around 60 participants shared information and discussed in the plenary and the working groups about sustainable sanitation. Key issues:
The resolution "Sustainable Sanitation: The Five-Year-Drive to 2015" by UNSGAB, to focus attention on sustainable sanitation and to mobilize political will - consequently also financial resources - was welcomed by the participants. The initiative builds on the success of the International Year of Sanitation and can well complement the activities of SuSanA.
In view of the JMP Monitoring for MDGs, suggestions for change were presented by Elisabeth Kvarnström: The classical concept of sanitation ladder leading from open defecation to flush toilets (technology based) is used for JMP monitoring but does not take into account if the infrastructure is functioning. Hence there is a need to include functions of sanitation systems like excreta containment, access, pathogen elimination and nutrient reuse in the sanitation ladder, see their publication
Recently a new SuSanA forum was set up where online discussions about all aspects around sustainable sanitation can take place. The messages are posted by registered members and the content can be googled by anyone. To join the forum: http://forum.susana.org/forum
In the working group 07 “Community, rural and schools (with gender and social aspects)” the fact sheet “Sustainable sanitation for schools” was presented. The aims of this fact sheet are to:
- Advocate for sustainable sanitation in schools in developing countries and countries in transition
- Highlight existing challenges
- Explore various innovations both in hardware and software using examples from developing countries
- Identify the common principles that are needed to achieve the desired outcomes.
The draft fact sheet “Integrating a gender perspective in sustainable sanitation“ is still in final discussion, see draft here
Barriers for up-scaling sustainable sanitation projects were discussed and why successful projects are not always been replicated and are not spread on its own. An initiative to evaluate enabling institutional settings with different socio-cultural background for up-scaling sustainable sanitation was proposed and will be developed by the working group 07.
More detailed information about the meeting can be found on the SuSanA website
