The Drafting Expert Group Meeting on Water and Health in Paris
On 29 and 30 September 2011 the Drafting Expert Group met under the auspices of the joint Secretariat UNECE/WHO-EURO of the Protocol on Water and Health in Paris.

Parties to the Protocol on Water and Health have committed to the obligation to guarantee equitable access to water and sanitation (Article 5 (l) of the Protocol) through accession to or ratification of the Protocol. The Drafting Expert Group had been mandated by the Working Group of the Parties to the Protocol to provide guidance to state parties on how to fulfil their commitment. Rather than attempting to issue formal guidelines, the document prepared adopts a good practices approach. The intention is that, by providing examples of how different countries have attempted to reduce inequities in access to water and sanitation services, policymakers will find inspiration to try similar or innovative measures.
The document will be presented to the meeting of the Working Group of the parties on 1 and 2 November 2011 in Geneva and will be open for further comments until mid December. Afterwards the document will be finalised and translated in order for its official launch at the World Water Forum 6 in Marseille in March 2012.
WECF and its partners were involved in the process from the beginning and provided input, inter alia, by submitting case studies. During this meeting participants not only discussed final amendments to the text, but also engaged in brainstorming about ideas on how to promote the document and how to proceed with the work on national and international level. The group favoured amongst others, the promotion of national events related to the PWH and the development of a self-evaluation tool for the assessment of the situation in the respective countries. WECF will stay involved and further promote the important issue of equitable access to water and sanitation.
