SuSanA working group 10: Operation and maintenance of sustainable sanitation systems

WECF, together with the Sustainable Sanitation Alliance (SuSanA), strives for appropriate attention to sanitation issues worldwide.

19.10.2011 |WECF news

There are approximately 2.6 billion people without access to any kind of improved sanitation worldwide. Large numbers of deaths are caused by sanitation-related diseases and poor hygiene conditions. Even in the European Union, more than 20 million citizens still lack safe sanitation. Socially acceptable, economically viable and technically appropriate sanitation systems can provide essential improvements in community health, education, poverty and many other interconnected issues. However sanitation seldom receives the appropriate attention by politicians and civil societies at local and international levels.

WECF, together with partners worldwide, promotes sustainable policies and solutions at the global level by raising awareness among politicians and civil societies about existing sanitation-related issues. WECF is an active member of the Sustainable Sanitation Alliance (SuSanA), an informal network of organisations which share a common vision on and knowledge about sustainable sanitation. Claudia Wendland, WECF coordinator sanitation projects is leading the SuSanA work group 07 “community, rural and schools (with gender and social aspects)” and Margriet Samwel, water coordinator at WECF, is actively contributing to the working group 3 “renewables, climate change and groundwater” and working group 10 “operation and maintenance”.

Participation in the SuSanA network is open to international, regional and local organisations which want to contribute ideas and be active in the promotion of sustainable sanitation systems. Meanwhile 161 organisations - NGOs, universities, research institutes, donors, banks, companies and public authorities - from all over the world are member of SuSanA and work in 11 thematic working groups.

Please see the fact sheet on Operation and maintenance of sustainable sanitation systems by the SuSanA working group 10.

More detailed information about SuSanA can be found on the SuSanA website.
