Women in Conflict Zones: Dutch Action Plan 1325

Nearly 40 Dutch organizations including WECF launched a National Action Plan 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security on 19 December 2011.

Nearly 40 Dutch organizations including WECF launched a National Action Plan 1325 (NAP 1325) for the period 2012 – 2015 on 19 December 2011, thus showing their strong commitment to United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security (UNSCR 1325).

Built on a previous NAP 1325 (2008 - 2011), the New National Plan unites both government and civil society organizations’ effort in supporting and promoting women empowerment and leadership in political arena and decision making process in (former) conflict areas, fragile states and countries in transition.

The lack of possibilities to involve in political activities and women underestimation at the local and national levels are evident in those places of the world, where poverty, inequality, violence and insecurity are spread widely.

However, being one of the most vulnerable groups in (former) conflict and transition zones, a number of women at the grass-roots are motivated to restore peace and security at the small scale. With joint forces, they develop the initiatives to reestablish the commonwealth of their families and communities. These courageous women find the strength in themselves not only to strive for peace and security, but also succeed in making female voices heard at international level.

The new National Action Plan 1325 (2012-2015) was launched by a number of Dutch organizations and institutions from different Dutch Ministries, women-peace oriented NGOs and activists from Southern-Sudan, Afghanistan, Burundi and Libya.

The NAP 1325 plays an important role in the struggle for the peaceful, secure and equal world for all. It provides with a framework to ensure that the principal provisions of UNSCR 1325, on how to heighten female inclusion in conflict resolution and reduce the impact of conflict on women, are being integrated into the work of different Dutch organizations.
