The World Water Forum 6, Marseille 2012 – an Overview

WECF contributed in tackling the global challenges of water and sharing know-how in favour of safe sanitation and drinking water at the 6th World Water Forum between 12 and 17 of March 2012 in Marseille, France.

15 March, Thursday

In the Europea Session, the publication "No One left behind: Good practices for equitable access to water and sanitation in the pan-European region" prepared under the Protocol on Water and Health with the leadership of the French Ministry of Labour, Employment and Health was presented. Existing solutions  were discussed which have been applied in the region to ensure equitable access.


WECF partner Anara Choitobaeva, Kyrgyz Alliance for Water and Sanitation, presented a case study from rural Kyrgyzstan Community based drinking water users unions (CDWUU) were set up and have been working sustainably during the last years due to a participatory methodology including gender and cultural aspects.
Please see her presentation here.  The current joint project from KAWS in cooperation with WECF "Home comforts" builds on the CDWUUs and aims at providing the rural households with warm water, heating and sustainable sanitation through solar collectors, energy efficient stoves and ecosan toilets.

14 March, Wednesday

Sascha Gabizon focused on the implementation of the human right to water and sanitation at the panel debate by trade unions and civil society on the human right to water, Palais de l'Europe, World Water Forum 6.

13 March, Tuesday

Claudia Wendland, WECF’s sanitation expert replaced Margriet Samwel at short notice, during the session Preventative Risk Management of the Water Cycle to Protect Public Health at the Palais de l’Europe.

Organised by the International Water Association (IWA) in cooperation with the WHO, WECF was able to present the outcomes of its Water Safety Plans which are implemented as practical tools in 25 schools in 6 countries. In rural areas of Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia nitrate pollution of ground water is one of the biggest problems. Further speeches and additions to the debate were brought by representatives from South Africa, the Swedish Enivronmental Institute (SEI) and the USA.

Later, at the Village of Solutions, C. Wendland presented WECF’s solution “Schools as WatSan Champions” and explained how Water Safety Plans can mobilize communities and schools.

12 March, Monday
Sascha Gabizon, WECF executive director, together with Margriet Samwel, coordinator for water projects, took part in the round table debate "Gender, Water and Desertification" at the Terres Arides Pavillion. In her presentation, S. Gabizon once again focused on the importance of 'engendering' all water goals.
