Christine von Weizsäcker Has Contributed With an Article Regarding the State of the Negotiations in the Run-Up to Rio+20

Christine von Weizsäcker is the president of WECF’s Board of Trustees since 2009. She is a biologist, researcher and activist. She has been working on technology assessment for civil society since the mid-seventies and participated in the negotiations of the Convention on Biodiversity (CBD) and its Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety since 1994. Her many publications have contributed to the scientific and public debate.

The article written by Mrs. von Weizsäcker is published in Outreach – a multi-stake holder magazine on environment and sustainable development produced by Stakeholder Forum for a Sustainable Future. The magazine acts as a conduit for the multifarious opinions of stakeholders. Further, it aims to empower stakeholders and provide space for debates and discourses on topics being negotiated at intergovernmental meetings.
Outreach will be published at the major meetings in the run-up to Rio+20, and then at the conference itself.

A glimpse of the article of Mrs. von Weizsäcker - “WTO does not yet have a standard setting body for implementing Rio Principles and sustainable development. Useful text on many topics could be futile if automatically overridden by trade agreements with strong implementation and compliance mechanisms but no finalized development agenda, let alone sustainable development agenda”.
