Rio+20 Preparatory Regional Conferences in Arab and French Speaking Countries

Preparatory Regional Conferences in Arab and French speaking countries before the UN Conference on Sustainable Development Rio+20

10.04.2012 |WECF

As part of its activities in relation to the UN Conference on Sustainable Development Rio+20, WECF, together with VAM (Voices of African Mothers), is also coordinating the participation of women’s representatives in the regional preparatory conferences in Arab and French speaking countries (Mauritania, Chad, Cameroon, Niger, Algeria, Tunisia, Jordan, Egypt, Morocco).

The women representatives of the latter states are greatly disadvantaged as all the official communication takes place in English.

The objectives of the initiative are to allow civil-society women from Arab and French speaking developing countries:
  1. to fully participate in the global women’s preparation for Rio+20 to assure that the global women major group benefits from the input and experience
  2. to bring the women’s policy statement for Rio+20 to the attention of policy makers in their countries, as well as to peers and press.
Another such regional conference took place in Tunisia in February.
