WECF and WEDO join hands in Call of Action letter to U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton

On behalf of the Rio+20 Women’s Major Group, WECF and WEDO appeal the U.S. Secretary of State to address U.S. negotiating positions currently jeopardizing a strong RIO+20 Summit outcome document

24.04.2012 |WECF news

The United States’ current positions on various key  paragraphs and issues regarding women’s rights and gender equality within the Rio+20 draft document have raised concern amongst many member organizations of the Women’s Major Group, especially in light of ongoing negotiations leading up to the Rio+20 Summit in June 2012.

The U.S. currently proposes deleting concrete targets designed to increase women’s leadership to at least 40 percent, removing proposals regarding human rights and equity, such as the reaffirmation of women’s vital role in sustainable development and universal access to safe, sufficient and nutritious food, and incorporating trade proposals that would be extremely detrimental to smallholder women farmers in developing countries.

In light of Hillary Rodham Clinton’s leadership and commitments to women’s rights and gender equality, WECF and WEDO have asked her to use her power to reverse the aforementioned U.S. positions.
