Bavarian Delegation visits food garden in the township Khayelitsha
On July 19, 2012 Ben Getz from Urban Harvest took the Bavarian Delegation to a fantastic and healthy looking food garden in Khayelitsha.

Ben Getz explained the idea of ‘growing’ people and especially women through gardening activities. The aim of the project is to make women able to help themselves and their kids on many fronts (creating healthy families, improving values, food sovereignty, revenue generating activities, problem-solving, developing creativity and resourcefulness.)
Zanele Sinuka, has always dreamed about a place for community activities and healthy food. She kept pushing and got this piece of land (ca 1000m²) offered by the city of Cape Town in 2008.
Today, 2012, three women are running the garden successfully; they can economically live from it and live in addition a healthy life! Private Bavarian donations and a lot of voluntary work from various people - especially women from Mielie (www.fa.mielie.com) - paid off: The garden is self-sustainable!
With the help of food gardens we want to contribute to building social capital within the poor communities allowing for sharing of information, building community cohesion, building bridges of goodwill and understanding and improving living standards. Together we focus on education and training in organic food production, capacity building and knowledge transfer.
The cooperation between the Western Cape organisations and WECF is embedded in a cooperation programme of 15 partners in six countries (Afghanistan, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, South Africa, Tajikistan, Uganda):
“Empower Women - Benefit for All” (EWA) is a programme with the overall goal to contribute to the economic and political empowerment of women from low-income rural and peri-urban regions. Tthe project builds on WECF’s multi-annual approach 2010 - 2015, which aims at contributing to achieving the Millennium Development Goals 1, 3 and 7.
