French Senate follows the road towards BPA-and EDCs-free products

On October 9th, French Senate approved a law banning Bisphenol A (BPA) from all food contact materials in 2015, and as from January 1st 2013 for those intended for 0 to 3 years old.

Seizing the opportunity of the vote on BPA, senators, in an unanimous movement, favoured provisions to ban certain EDCs identified by the REACH and Classification, Labeling and Packaging regulations from use in medical devices for pregnant and breastfeeding women, infants, as well as for parenteral nutrition materials, tubes being used in neonatolgy departments and maternaties containing 3 ttypes of phthalates.

The resulting set of measures on EDCs therefore gains coherence. If confirmed by Members of Parliament at second reading, these provisions will place France at the same level of other EU Member States such as Denmark or Sweden, which do not wait until EU-wide actions are taken to implement precautionary actions preventing EDCs exposures.
