On 29 and 30 October the Task Force on Public Participation in Decision-Making of the Aarhus Convention held its third meeting in cooperation with the Bureau under the Protocol on Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) to the Espoo Convention (Convention on Environmental Impact Assessment in a Transboundary Context). The first day was dedicated to the discussion of two guidance documents on public participation, one developed under the Aarhus Convention, the other under the SEA Protocol.

Discussion on the extensive Aarhus Convention’s draft Recommendations on Public Participation in Decision-making took place in the morning. Comments on the structure and the content of the document can still be submitted until 30 November 2012. The second half day the SEA’s Good Practice Recommendations on Public Participation in Strategic Decision-making were presented and comments provided afterwards. The document is open to comments until 15 November 2012.

The second day contained many presentations on the challenges and obstacles to public participation in strategic decision-making and good practices and innovative tools to address these. The presentations will soon be available here http://www.unece.org/pp_in_strategic_dm.html.

This was the second thematic meeting of the Task Force which proves to be an effective way to reach out to other forums and allows for looking into the different practical approaches taken when implementing public participation in other sectors. It is of great interest for stakeholders of the Aarhus Convention and other forums as it provides a platform for discussion and exchange and fosters a deeper understanding of the principle of public participation.
