BPA industry plays down health effects with biased studies

Part of the late lessons from early warnings report of the European Environment Agency also revealed the heavy bias in studies on the harm of BPA.

Over 800 independent, trustworthy studies have been ignored by Food safety Authorities in Europe and the USA. Instead, outdated measuring and risk assessment guidelines were used which did not change in the last 50 years. Most of them were also sponsored by the BPA producing industry. Despite some gaps in the data, the more recent, peer-reviewed studies all proved a negative health effect of BPA below the human exposure to the chemical considered as safe.

BPA is thought to be an endocrine disruptor, which means it messes with the hormone system of the body and our cells. It thus affects reproduction, immunity, metabolism and behaviour, BPA is used to make hard plastics and can be contained in food containers, children toys, and even pacifiers. In the USA, tests found BPA traces in 93% in all tested people. As a reaction, France has recently banned BPA  in food containers for young children with an extent to the ban to food contact materials by January 1st 2015, and the European Parliament has called for a a better protection from them earlier in January 2013.
