626 hazardous substances of which 488 are still legal

ChemSec updates its SIN list to contain 626 hazardous chemicals of which 138 are on the REACH candidate list

ChemSec has updated its list of chemical substances of high concern. It now contains 626 chemicals which should be regulated in the EU, compared to 138 already on the REACH candidate list. Those 138 chemicals are agreed by EU member states to be of high concern and subsequently regulated.

ChemSec, a Swedish organization, has updated its SIN list (Substitute It Now!) to version 2.1, adding more chemicals of high concerns. Such chemicals are assessed to have negative health impacts on the human and the environment. These are highly hazardous chemicals in use in a wide range of everyday consumer products, posing a threat to the health of everyone.

Most of the newly added substances are classified as carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic to reproduction according to the EU CLP regulation. With only 138 of these substances on the REACH list, there is still a lot of work to be done to regulate all hazardous substances in the EU. However, the SIN list is an indicator of what substances will be banned in the future and are thus also often replaced by companies in their products.
