The UNECE Water Convention goes global
The UNECE informs in a press release about the Water Convention having received enough ratifications to be entered into force gobally
11.02.2013 |UNECE
17 years after the first ratification, enough parties have signed the convention to allow its entering into force worldwide. Originally negotiated as a regional instrument by countries of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, it has turned into an international best-practice model. It is expected to be open to non-UNECE countries by the end of 2013.
Especially since 60% of the world’s freshwaters are transboundary, the global quality of the convention is of strategic importance in protecting and harnessing the benefits of transboundary water resources. Its legal binding avoids international conflicts over water, fosters exchange, and will broaden the pool of experience.
