Overview of Urine-Diverting Dry Toilets (UDDTs)

Technology review incorporates WECF's experiences with dry toilets

27.03.2013 |WECF

Authors Christian Rieck, Elisabeth von Münch and Heike Hoffmann published, on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, a technology overview of urine-diverting dry toilets (UDDTs). This overview discusses functions of the UDDTs, design considerations, installation costs, common operation, and maintenance issues. Successful examples of large-scale UDDT programmes are mentioned to illustrate this. Moreover, several projects of WECF-partners are also serving as an example, since WECF successfully makes use of the UDDTs.  Most importantly, the authors fight the notion that UDDTs are only available for a relative high price. On the contrary, a number of UDDT designs can be constructed at low-costs by making use of locally available construction materials.

The entire technology overview can be found here.
