WECF explains the winning project of the 2013 UN “Water for Life Best Practice Award”

At the end of May, at the World Water Day ceremony in The Hague, WECF’s partner Ormax received the UN award for Best Practice 2013 in the category “Best participatory, communication, awareness-raising and education practices.” In the video, Margriet Samwel explains what the prize stands for.

The award was presented because the project "Safe Water and Sanitation for all in Moldova” is an outstanding example of community mobilization, education, and cooperation. With stakeholders from all levels working together, an integrated approach to protect ground water was developed. Therefore it is also a Best Practice Example of approaches to protect ground water and ensure clean water and safe waste-water management. Especially the cooperation and education-aspects are highlighted in the project, bundling up all the key points the speakers of the World Water Day, pointing out that water is an issue of cooperation, education and that waste water is a resource.

WECF coordinated the project funded by France Libertés, Milieukontakt International, Church World Service and implemented by the Moldavian partner Ormax. WECF also gave advice for implementation of Water Safety Plans and the construction of Ecosan toilets instead of the commonly used pit latrines. Especially in Moldova, with its high poverty rate and the lack of a centralized water system, the project was of great importance for the quality of life and health of the people.

During World Water Day, former Prince and now King Willem Alexander also mentioned the positive role of UNSGAB with the key priorities of universal access to water and sanitation, prevention of water pollution and the efficient usage of water resources and waste water. Sanitation is no taboo anymore and problems can be tackled efficiently.
