Recently a Compendium on water and sanitation planning has been published by WECF and partners. It consists of  3 parts (A,B and C) and  aims at enabling  communities to develop Water and Sanitation Safety Plans for small scale water supplies and sanitation systems. The Compendium focuses on dug wells, boreholes, springs and piped centralized water supply systems, as well as on assessing the quality of sanitation facilities such as school toilets.

The publication explains the approach of developing Water and Sanitation Safety Plans in rural communities and provides detailed background information on water and sanitation issues: How to accomplish a water and sanitation safety plan (Part A); Background information for developing WSSP (Part B) and How schools can be involved in these activities (Part C).

The Compendium provides practical, technical and regulatory information on possible drinking water sources, water treatment and distribution, sanitation and wastewater treatment, water protection and water quality, management of storm water and water related regulations. Its users can be local and regional authorities and water operators in rural communities in Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia. It supports as well the school curricula and includes theoretical lessons on general water issues such as the water cycle, and also specific information on school sanitation, water and hygiene.
The publication has been prepared in the framework of the project “Water and Sanitation Safety Plans in Rural Areas of Macedonia and Romania“ funded by the German Environment Foundation DBU.
