WECF presents gender perspectives at EESC on new climate agreement

On 5 November 2014 the Sustainable Development Observatory of the EESC held a consultative meeting in Brussels with the title “Towards a New Climate Agreement in 2015”. The aim of this event, which was facilitated by the chair of the EESC/SDO Lutz Ribbe, was to identify key messages of civil society organisations for the upcoming negotiation rounds, in particular COP 20 in Lima.

Inge Paulini from the German Advisory Council on Global Change presented very inspiring policy recommendations resulting from a recent study “Climate Change as a World Citizen Movement” calling for a broad engagement of all parts of civil society being a driver for a paradigm shift in order to tackle climate change.

The head of unit “International Relations” of the newly created DG Climate Action of the European Commission Elina Badram presented the recent activities of the EC regarding the upcoming climate negotiations. Shocking was her comment on the participation of CSOs in the negotiations:  she denied the necessity of the presence of CSOs in the negotiations. This is contradictory to the the EUs’ and most of the EU countries’ commitments towards public participation under several international agreements, in particular the UNECE Aarhus Convention.

After the introductory speeches several groups of civil society, such as United Cities and Local Governments, the European Chemical Industry Council, the Belgian Trade Union CSE-ACV, the Climate Action Network and others were provided slots to introduce their key messages.

Many of the core messages are now being discussed within the women and gender constituency to be finalised for the upcoming COP 20 in Lima.
