On March 8, it’s International Women’s Day – for WECF, every day is International Women’s Day

The International Women’s Day is an opportunity to point out that women in many areas still have to fight for equal treatment and rights. From 9 March to 20 March, the 59th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) will review progress made in the past 20 years since the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing (1995). WECF co-organizes side-events during this CSW session, measuring progress in gender justice.
WECF’s director Sascha Gabizon is currently a coordinator of the Women’s Major Group (WMG). The WMG is a network of over 500 women’s organizations. It lobbies for sustainable development with a focus on women’s rights, promotion of gender equality and it represents the women’s organizations with a single, bundled voice in UN negotiations.
For WECF, every day is women's day, but this year is a particular challenge for women and sustainability, as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will be adopted in September by the United Nations, replacing the Millenium Development Goals (MDGs).
It will be crucial to ensure that gender equality is a fundamental element of the SDGs, throughout the seventeen Goals, and WECF will continue to fight for human rights for women and girls everywhere. Not only on International Women’s Day!
