OHCHR publishes alarming report on increased violence against women in Ukraine

Women in Ukraine are confronted with heightened sexual and domestic violence

02.03.2015 |

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) recently published a report on the rapidly worsening human rights situation in Ukraine. With the prolongation of the conflict and displacement, women are increasingly vulnerable to severe human rights violations both in government and armed group controlled areas.

Disturbing cases of sexual violence against women continue to emerge. For instance, one woman who was forced to flee her home, was raped by armed groups. She remains severely traumatized. The Human Rights Mission in Ukraine (HRMU) is concerned that the violence against women there may be much more prevalent than currently reported.

The women are increasingly at risk of being abused at home as well, as servicemen return from the conflict area without receiving any proper social and psychological services. NGO La Strada registered an alarming increase in calls relating to domestic violence (72.2 per cent of total calls).

Additionally, women in Ukraine are acutely affected by the economic consequences of the conflict. In order to put food on the table, some women have no other option than to resort to prostitution. They are at heightened risk of being trafficked as sexual commodities.
