WECF signs statement on UN Declaration and co-formulates recommendations

The CSW59’s Political Declaration is potentially a major step backward in the struggle for women’s rights

10.03.2015 |

From 9 March to 20 March, the 59th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW59) takes place. On this occasion, the CSW adopts a Political Declaration. The Women’s Major Group (WMG), an international advocacy network that is co-organized by WECF, states that this Political Declaration fails to match the level of ambition in the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (1995).

The WMG demands a more powerful Political Declaration that commits to 1) accelerated implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, and 2) universal ratification and implementation of CEDAW (Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women). Additionally, the WMG formulated specific recommendations for improvement.

The WMG’s statement is signed by 974 women’s organizations from all over the world, including WECF. The full text is available in English, French and Spanish.
