WECF co-organized Successful Workshop on Hazardous Chemicals and REACH for Sustainable Entrepreneurs

Brainstorming about smart solutions with sustainable entrepreneurs from the baby- and children's sector

" Can I trust my provider for using safe chemicals? Should I have all of my products tested by laboratories?"  These are examples of questions retailers ponder about. So WECF, IVAM and BabyBeGood organized a workshop on 27 March 2015 to look for smart solutions, together with retailers.

Amongst the workshop participants were retailers, branch associations, the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment, and the Ministry of Public Health, Well-Being and Sports. WECF director Sascha Gabizon kicked off the workshop with an alarming fact: “A recent study of the Dutch inspection authorities shows that 25 percent of toys contains plasticizers.”

Tamara Peers and Anna Schoemakers (BabyBeGood) discussed safe toys and organic baby products. Then, speakers Serge Leon (MODINT), Hildo Krop and Ckees van Oijen (IVAM) gave tips on how to check chemicals and their health risks. Finally, Chantal Van den Bossche (WECF) spoke about insufficient awareness amongst consumers and challenges to encourage behavioral change.

The workshop sessions on dilemmas and smart solutions resulted in numerous ideas and recommendations. WECF and project partners will organize a follow-up workshop in October 2015. On 15 April 2015, a mini symposium on hormone disrupting chemicals will take place in The Hague, which is co-organized by WECF and the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment. WECF will present the recommendations to the Dutch government and to the European Union.

This WECF workshop was made possible with DG Environment’s support via the LIFE+ project ChildProtect.
