Over 100 NGOs Urge EU Commission to Make Lobby Register Legally Binding

WECF co-signed ALTER-EU letter to commissioner Timmermans demanding full lobby transparency

28.05.2015 |

The ALTER-EU coalition wrote a letter to Frans Timmermans, European Commission Vice President, on 11 May 2015 to demand full lobby transparency, arguing it should be compulsory for all lobbyists to sign-up to a high-quality, legally-binding, EU lobby register. In total 117 non-governmental organizations and trade unions signed the letter, including WECF.

The current lobby registry is voluntary and not legally binding. The ALTER-EU coalition wrote that the European Commission should encourage more disclosure about lobbying, including on the money lobbyists spend, and demanded a ban on meetings between all Commission staff and unregistered lobbyists. Current rules ban only the most senior staff from those meetings.

Health groups versus pharmaceutical companies

Signatories from the health sector are worried that pharmaceutical companies have increasing influence on EU decision making, since companies work for corporate interests, rather than the public interest. For instance, some large pharmaceutical companies lobbied against the Clinical Trials Directive in 2013, which requires results from clinical trials to be posted to a public registry.
