Letter to EU vice-president Timmermans, regarding the sustainable development goals

EU vice-president Timmermans, who is responsible for Sustainable Development was asked to ensure greatest priority for an ambitious implementation, monitoring and accountability plan and strategy, and integration through all policy areas of the European Commission.

07.10.2015 |

Before the start of the UN Summit in New York last month several European Civil Society Organisations (CSO), among which WECF is one, addressed a letter to the First Vice-President of the European Union (EU) mr Frans Timmermans.

The aim of this letter was to address the importance of Agenda 2030 for sustainable development. In this letter, the European CSOs welcomed the EU’s mapping exercise to analyse if the EU had appropriate policies in place to implement Agenda 2030. Furthermore, they urged the EU to match the ambitious agenda with an implementation strategy in order to ensure well-being for all. Additionally, the CSO’s argued for a meaningful participatory process and a sufficiently effective monitoring and accountability mechanism. The entire letter can be read here.
