This weekend, a 3 day summit was  held in New York at the UN headquarters to officially present the 2016-2030 Sustainable Development Goals to leaders of 150 countries, among which president Obama and the Pope

Sascha Gabizon, executive director of WECF International and co-facilitator of the Women’s Major Group on the Sustainable Development Goals, was also present at the Summit and has been in NY for some time to negotiate on the goals and their indicators. Gabizon and the Women’s Major Group especially asked for the strengthening of SGD 5: to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. See Sascha Gabizon’s article on why the SDGs need to integrate gender equality here.

All countries are required to implement the new goals, which have already been presented to the UN General Assembly after they were created by an open working group of 70 countries. The indicators of the goals are still under discussion and will be published in March.

Annual national progress reviews of the SGDGs are scheduled and every four year heads of state will meet for a stocktake. The SDGs are praised for devoting more attention to gender equality and climate change than their predecessors, the millennium goals, and already received global promotion through campaigns such as the Global Goals Campaign by filmmaker Rick Curtis. However, they are also criticized for anticipated funding problems, the lack of planned alterations to the economic and trade system and the lack of data to measure progress.

It is important to keep advocating for strong indicators for the SDGs. The Women’s Major Group has already written an article on their 10 red flags here and organised a forum to share their #feministvision for the SDGs, in which topics such as the role of the private sector in the SDGs and the role of discrimination of sexual and gender identity were discussed.

The Climate Summit in Paris in December 2015 will be the first test for the dedication of World leaders to the new goals.
