Climate Agreement is non-just, non-equal and non-effective, says Women and Gender Constituency

WGC in Bonn issues angry statement on ‘Non-Paper’ for a ‘Non-Effective’ ‘Non-Just’ ‘Non-Equal’ Climate Agreement COP21 Paris

21.10.2015 |

The Women and Gender Constituency (WGC) recently sent out a statement along with their allies about the status of the textual basis of the negotiations heading into the last round of discussions next week prior to the Conference Of Parties (COP21) Paris.

The statement regarding the co-Chairs ‘non-paper’ was released on the 16th of October. The statement states that the Women and Gender Constituency (WGC) are angry about the Climate Agreement and say that it is non-effective, non-just and non-equal. The WGC believe that many crucial issued voiced by the Party were left out and have highlighted several issues that must be brought back into the agreement. WGC think that the paper undermines the promises of the co-Chairs process and that this ‘non-paper’ might influence the collective will to  engage towards a fair agreement.

These are the key issues that WGC want to address regarding the malfunction of the ‘non-paper’:

1.    Deletion of gender equality and human rights in the draft agreement.
2.    Does not address the causes of the climate crisis.
3.    Inadequate reflection of CBDR.
4.    Insufficient attention to rights-based adaptation.
5.    Imbalanced reflection on key issues.
6.    Finance must be new and additional.
7.    Technology must be safe, appropriate and environmentally, economically and socially sound.
