EU Council Adopts Gender Action Plan 2016-2020

EU plans to focus on four key areas for gender equality through their external relations

On 26 October 2015, the EU Council adopted the new Gender Action Plan (GAP) (13201/15) “Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment: Transforming the Lives of Girls and Women through EU External Relations 2016-2020”, which follows the Gender Action Plan 2010-2015.

This plan focuses on the implementation of four pivotal and ambitious areas outlined in the GAP throughout EU external actions:

  • Ensuring girls’ and women's physical and psychological integrity;
  • Promoting the social and economic rights / empowerment of women and girls;
  • Strengthening girls' and women's voice and participation;
  • Shifting the institutional culture to deliver more effectively on EU commitments.
