How a biogas plant improved Jane’s life

Collecting firewood before having the biogas plant
Jane Ntegge (42) is glad with the installed biogas plant. She lives in Mugereka village, Mulagi Sub County with her husband and five children. Before, the family used to use approximately ten kilograms of fire wood each day. The firewood would support preparation of three meals a day. A meal would be ready between thirty minutes to an hour. Access to fire wood as an energy source was expensive in terms of time (collection from a distance of about two kilometres). The family also used to purchase kerosene for 1,000 Ugandan shillings a day to provide light in a lamp at night.

Thanks to the installed biogas digester, the family can now easily cook four meals a day within five to thirty minutes depending on the type of food. In addition, the family can now have light for four hours (7pm-10pm). Additionally, the yield of produce from the family’s kitchen garden has been boosted due to production and utilization of organic manure from the bio-slurry.

The biogas digester has a volume of three cubic meters and is fed with the dung of three cows. The biogas technology is innovative in the sense that the construction material is based on bamboo and cement plaster. The construction can be done locally with trained craftsmen and women who are in charge of weaving the bamboo basket. For the women and craftsmen, the biogas plants present a good income generation activity.
The project has been implemented with the local NGO ARUWE and is funded by the Erbacher foundation.
