Historic climate agreement reflects real world change, but for women this will be far too slow

Reality Check on the Paris Agreement from the Women and Gender Constituency (WGC) 12 December 2015

14.12.2015 |

In a historic moment, all the world’s countries came together to signal that it’s game over for fossil fuels. 195 countries reached across traditional divides this Saturday to unite and seal the deal on a historic climate accord.

The Women and Gender Constituency, of which WECF is an active partner, responded with a reality check: "We know that climate change is the greatest threat to rights in our time, and we know that women often bear the brunt of these impacts. We have made progress under this Convention in understanding and responding to the gendered impacts of climate change in the last few years. We believe that operational language on gender equality, alongside other fundamental rights, in Article 2, defining the purpose of the agreement would have gone far to ensure that all forthcoming climate actions take into account the rights, needs and perspectives of women and men and encourage women’s full and equal participation in decision-making. This was the moment to set the right path, the just path for climate action".

WECF's Executive Director Sascha Gabizon stated:

“We hear everywhere that the Paris Agreement spells a "slow death of fossil fuels". But for the women’s groups that will be too slow! We are very concerned that concrete measures and targets and guiding principles of human rights and gender equality are missing in the Agreement! We will have to focus now on keeping the “false“ solutions - such as geo-engineering and nuclear energy - abreast, as they will cause more human suffering and make the planet uninhabitable.”

“We do not give up on our beautiful planet. We do not give up on a future for every species. We will never give up on our campaign for climate justice.” - Women's Global Call for Climate Justice
