“There is more than 99% probability that EDCs contribute to at least one disease”

Professor Transande discusses growing scientific evidence on adverse effects of endocrine disrupting chemicals

21.01.2016 |Chemical Watch

Evidence increasingly confirms that synthetic chemicals disrupt the endocrine system and that these chemicals contribute to disease and disability across the lifespan. Last month, the Endocrine Society published  a scientific statement documenting the substantial strengthening of evidence on endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) since 2009.

In 2012, the WHO and UNEP published an alarming report about endocrine disease, caused by synthetic chemical exposures. Scientific concerns about this report were rebutted in a recent article in Regulatory Toxicology and Pharmacology, and the WHO-UNEP report was welcomed at the fourth International Conference on Chemicals Management (SAICM).

According to Leonardo Transande, Associate professor at NYU School of Medicine, together there is more than 99 percent probability that EDCs contribute to at least one disease, and the costs of EDC exposure in Europe are likely to be over 150 billion euro annually. Transande et al. published these estimates in four peer-reviewed manuscripts in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.
