In Uganda, WECF works with local partner organisations to introduce gender sensitivity trainings and conservation agriculture. Two participants in the trainings share their views.
Mr. Chebet Abubaker participated in the gender sensitivity trainings. According to him, before these trainings, a woman was seen as an inferior person in Uganda and required to perform all domestic tasks. Furthermore, she could be subject to genital mutilation. The training thought mr. Abubaker that in order for a household to prosper, men and women should divide tasks and work together. Now, he also performs domestic duties that his wife used to perform, such as cooking, washing, collecting and chopping firewood and working in the garden. Furthermore, as regards his wife, he states that “I completely do not deny her the chance to make use of any opportunity that comes her way”. Mr. Abubaker also expressed a willingness to discuss gender issues in the household with other men.
Mrs Carolyne Cherotich participated in the conservation agriculture trainings. She claims that due to the new ways of working her land “My income has more than doubled from maize and bananas and I’m able to save in my Village Savings and Loan group”. Furthermore, as her husband participated in one of the gender sensitivity trainings, now they can both decide on how to spend the income of the family. This even allows them to use some of their income for saving.
