Experts discuss integration of chemicals management with SDGs
Last week, stakeholders involved in international chemicals activities met in Geneva and compiled a course of action for linking sound chemicals and waste management with the Sustainable Development Goals.

In September 2015, the UN General Assembly adopted 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in order to set the course for the future. Among the ambitious plan to chart out global development across social, environmental and economic areas for the next 15 years, several SDGs target hazardous chemical and waste management.
On account of the requirement to implement the SDGs until 2030, stakeholders and experts of the chemical industry met last week in Geneva to discuss their course of action.
Among the participants of the meeting has been Alexandra Caterbow, WECF’s chemicals and health expert. She discussed with members of the UN Environment Programme, trade unions and industry the necessity to raise attention for sound management of chemicals and waste on global policy level.
“Much more effort by all stakeholders is needed, including to reach out beyond the chemical and waste community and actually implement practical activities to reduce exposure and protect human health and environment”, Caterbow stated.
The participants agreed on a list of concrete actions to link sound chemicals management to the SDGs. Besides, especially representatives of the chemicals industry stressed the need for more global standards and harmonized regulations. A summary of the meeting will be presented to the UN Environment Assembly in Nairobi in June.
