The importance of women’s initiatives to address water and sanitation problems

March, 21-22 2016, WECF participated at the Regional Workshop on achieving equitable access to water and sanitation in Geneva organized by UNECE. The workshop provided participants with the opportunity to review progress of the work on assessing equitable access to water and sanitation under the Protocol Water and Health. About 60 experts working in the water and sanitation sector participated and shared experiences from their pan-European region perspectives.
The discussion mainly focused on possible ways to achieve equitable access to water in sanitation. In particular, participants discussed about the role of the different actors and stakeholders involved and concluded that policymakers need to adequately and efficiently work towards this goal. Financial implications were also discussed. The major outcome is the draft of the Strategic note on action plans to achieve equitable access to water and sanitation, which will be used as a guiding document for future projects related to water and sanitation access for the years 2017-2019.
Bistra Mihaylova/WECF showed several concrete examples on how to successfully implement water and sanitation projects in different countries in the EECCA region. The presentation focused on tangible factors that daily impact equal access to water and sanitation such as regional inequalities and deteriorated conditions of rural areas in Kyrgyzstan and Georgia. WECF highlighted the importance of women’s initiatives to address water and sanitation problems.
The positive achievements and important outcomes of WECF projects based on women’s empowerment, such as improvement in water access, quality and households’ benefits were used as examples to demonstrate that gender perspectives are fundamental when managing complex issues such as equitable access to water and sanitation in practical terms.
